There is something so special about photographing a family during the newborn stage. Everything feels a little slower, a little softer, and full of tiny details you know are going to change so quickly.
This family session at Riverfront Park in Salem, Oregon had the sweetest mix of quiet newborn moments, sibling cuddles, and warm golden-hour light. I loved being able to photograph not only the whole family together, but also the individual relationships between each parent and their baby.
Family Photos at Riverfront Park in Salem
Riverfront Park is such a beautiful location for family photos in Salem because it gives us a lot of variety without needing to move very far. There are open grassy areas, trees, soft evening light, and plenty of room for little ones to move around and be themselves.
For this session, we used a simple blanket for some of the seated photos and then moved around the park for a mix of standing portraits and more relaxed moments.
A Mix of Posed and Candid Family Photos
My favorite family galleries are never made up of only everyone-looking-at-the-camera photos.
I always want to capture a few traditional family portraits, but I also love the moments that happen in between — a mom looking down at her baby, dad smiling while holding his little one, siblings snuggling together, and all of those tiny details that make this season of life feel so personal.
Those are often the photos families end up loving the most.
Documenting the Little Details
Newborns change so quickly, which is why I love including close-up details during family sessions too.
Tiny toes, little hands, sleepy expressions, the way they fit into their parents’ arms — they may seem like such small things right now, but years from now they become some of the most meaningful photographs in the gallery.
When Is the Best Time for Family Photos at Riverfront Park?
I especially love photographing Riverfront Park sessions during the evening when the sun is lower in the sky. Golden hour creates that warm, soft light you see throughout this gallery and gives photos a more relaxed, dreamy feeling.
For families with young children, I also try to keep things moving so we aren’t spending too long forcing one pose. We can cuddle, sit together, walk, play, and let the little ones take breaks when they need them.
